Seachtain na Gaeilge

Is é Seachtain na Gaeilge
Bhi béim ar damhsa sa rang inniu

Is é Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhi go leor mar gheall ar ceol damhsa ar an chláir inniu. Tá suim sa ceol Gaelach ar fud an domhain. Riverdance , a theatre show based on Irish traditional dance has been touring the world for 20 years and has been seen and loved by millions all over the world. The show grew from a a six minute interval act in an international song competition. Dublin was hosting the competition that year. You can see for yourself what made us so excited Here is interval act from the 1994 in the clip below. The best bit I think is when the two solo dancers are joined by the full company of dancers about 4 and 1/2 minutes in . The dancers feet in hard dancing shoes made a great percussion sound
Special thank you to the dancers  for demonstrating the dance steps.

Close up on the Clarinet

Ash Weds

The spotlight this week was on the clarinet  a member of the woodwind family.  We had a good look at a real live instrument instrument and saw how the pieces fit together. It is a reed instrument. A reed is cut from a thick blade of grass and is fastened to the mouthpiece. Check out the two videos below .  The clarinet is widely used in classical music and jazz. Listen to the theme from American composer George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The music is jazz in style and arranged for a full size symphony orchestra.

Garda Band Day

It was a very  exciting day at the Marist  Primary School on Thursday. The Garda Band came to the hall for a fabulous performance.  Under director, Pat Kenny, the Garda band delighted their audience with a variety of popular tunes with which the children were familiar. Film themes, Mission Impossible, Ghost Busters, Cartoon favourites, a sing along to hits from Frozen and top tunes from the world of sport. The conductor involved the audience at every opportunity and introduced all the instruments in the band – piccolo, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, guitar, keyboard and drums. Children and teachers were invited to play a supporting role as percussionists and demonstrators. One of the members stepped forward to add vocals on a Johnny Cash selection. Pat Fitzpatrick on tin whistle demonstrated tremendous skill and proved that the smallest quietest instrument in the band can made a big impact. A highly entertaining and educational experience for all the  adults and children .

Fact Files
Opera A story told completely by singing. Musicals have songs too but also spoken dialogue Opera singers don't use microphones and yet fill the largest opera houses with just their voice alone . The national opera house in most countries  is usually a very grand building.

Question Ireland has a national opera house . Can you find out where it is .  It isn't in
Dublin
